Getting Fit with Squash

So you want to get fit, the best way to do this is the old fashion way, you sweat! And sports are the best way to sweat and burn calories. Squash has been called the best sport for fitness by some groups, I know for a fact that a good number of people will disagree about that believing that their preferred sport is the one that allows for the best results in weight loss. But for now let us assume that the claim is true and that the physically demanding sport of squash is the best game to play and lose weight.

What do I need to get started

If you are planning to use squash as your workout routine to get thinner I suggest that you find yourself a local club or organization that can help you learn the sport properly. When you do most of these organizations, clubs, or gyms will have some equipment for rent to help you get started, but I highly suggest that you invest on the equipment to truly be dedicated to the sport. Aside from membership and court rental fees you will need to spend for the following:

  • Good shoes for playing squash.
  • Workout clothes, preferably light and comfortable to move in. (Ask your gym/club for advice)
  • Squash Racket
  • Ball(s) (it is good to have more than one, but one is enough given that you will probably never lose it)

In order to truly get into the sport and follow through you must show dedication by investing in the sport and in yourself. My brother who’s a bail bondsman in Bakersfield tried playing squash with me the last week and now he’s a big fan 🙂

The Benefits of Playing Squash

You enjoy a lot of benefits when you play any sport, such as a boost in self-confidence, a good cardio workout, a healthy social life through interacting with fellow players, a way to relieve stress, and a better psychological health (studies show that playing sports help with this). In addition, since squash is an indoor sport, you can enjoy it throughout the year in any weather, so there is no environmental excuse you can use to get out of working out.

Specific Health Benefits

A good cardio workout is the major reason for playing a sport like squash but what exactly do you get when you play the game?

  • Increased Cardiovascular health
  • Increased endurance in time
  • Weight loss and maintenance
  • Increased hand-eye coordination
  • Practice your reflexes
  • Develop your strength, agility and Flexibility

All in all

If you want to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle, aside from diet, exercise is a major key to achieving your goals. It can be any sport, as long as you are experiencing cardio workouts and fast movement. Squash is a good exercise because of the sudden burst of movements and speed, this utilizes what is known as the after-burn effect which allows for calorie burn to continue even hours after the workout. The physically demanding sport also allows the development of muscles which in turn help you increase your metabolism, making it easier for you to lose and maintain your weight. I work for a carpet cleaning company in Utah and me with my co-workers play squash every weekend, it’s a great game and we love it.
